CIBSE Certification ltd launches the CIBSE TM39 Metering Specialist scheme

As the built environment races to meet net zero targets, and the focus shifts to embodied carbon, the importance of Operational energy remains, along with our dependence on accurate metering and monitoring of energy usage.

The updated CIBSE TM39: Building metering and monitoring lays out the framework for developing a successful metering strategy. It includes key sections on validation, communications and cybersecurity and helps organisations install and use meters to understand, manage, and optimise their energy use with clarity and confidence. It is relevant to clients, managing agents, building services professionals, energy managers, facilities managers, and anyone else involved in metering.

“Reliable assessment of building performance depends on the accurate measurement of energy and water use. Whilst robust metering and monitoring systems provide the foundation, the reliability of the resulting data ultimately depends on the competence of the professionals who specify, install, commission and maintain them”, said Ellen Salazar, Head of Building Services Engineering at CIBSE

To address these challenges, CIBSE Certification Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of CIBSE, has developed a professional certification scheme developed in alignment with the updated CIBSE TM39: Building Metering and Monitoring (2026) guidance.

Our new CIBSE TM39 Metering Specialist scheme is the result of close collaboration with CIBSE’s Technical and Industry experts and Certification’s personnel scheme expertise”, said Kieran O'Brien, Director of CIBSE Certification ltd, and meets growing demand for formally recognised competence in metering and monitoring of operational energy in buildings. As reporting requirements continue to evolve, the need for qualified specialists in this field has never been greater.
