Embodied Carbon Verification (ECV) Scheme
The ECV scheme is an initiative developed in consultation with CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) to advance environmentally friendly practices within the built environment. It covers MEP products used for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, electrical and public health but does not include non-standard equipment such as photovoltaics.
The CIBSE TM65 publication and methodology is an Industry recognised methodology for estimating embodied carbon associated with MEP products in the absence of EDPs, and is available from CIBSE https://www.cibse.org/tm65 . Manufacturers of MEP products routinely use the tools to undertake self assessments of their products.
The ECV scheme launched in 2024 with the support of a diverse pool of manufacturers with over 12 months of feedback incorporated meets manufacturers needs by:
- adding an additional layer of credibility to their CIBSE TM65 calculations.
- assuring that claims are independently verified by a 3rd party Certification Body.
It helps consultants by providing assurance that the embodied carbon claims are based on solid evidence and that any changes to the product over time are reflected in the certified values.
Early adopters and supporters of the scheme include:
Crane Fluid Systems UK Fujitsu General Air Conditioning
Grundfos Water Treatment Mitsubishi Electric
Precision Refrigeration S & P Ventiliation Systems
Williams Refrigeration
Certification is confidential and organisations are only identified with their agreement and a register of ECV certified MEP products is under development to meet global demand from consultants and users of verified carbon data.
